HLS Downloader: Download Fragmented Media Files with Ease
HLS Downloader is a Chrome add-on developed by leocompson that allows users to easily download fragmented media files with the .ts file extension from the internet. With the rise of HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), this add-on provides a convenient solution for downloading media content.
HLS, or HTTP Live Streaming, is a new media format developed by Apple Inc. It utilizes a master playlist with the .m3u8 file extension. The extension first downloads the master playlist and then identifies the playlist content within it. Each playlist contains several fragmented items, all of which are displayed in the user interface (UI) with a download and remove button. By simply clicking the download button, the extension downloads all fragmented media and merges them into a single media file.
It is worth noting that the interface for the extension can be opened in a new tab or a separate window. Users can right-click on the toolbar button to choose the appropriate context. Additionally, the UI features a toggle button to easily turn the add-on on or off.
However, it is important to mention that HLS Downloader is not responsible for the media content that users download with this add-on. It is strongly recommended to verify the related media copyright permissions on each website before downloading any media files.
To download the HLS stream, users have three options. Firstly, they can manually add a stream URL by entering the desired URL with the .m3u8 file extension in the UI. Secondly, as users browse the internet, this extension monitors webpages and captures all HLS media files. If any are found, it automatically downloads the playlist and updates the badge number accordingly (only when the add-on is turned on). Lastly, users can download the HLS stream via the context-menu item by right-clicking on .m3u8 streams and selecting "Download with HLS Downloader" from the context menu.
